After surviving a shipwreck on an isolated island for five years, Oliver returns to his home city with a mission to right the wrongs of his father and save the city from the crime that has flourished in his absence. At first, he's considered a vigilante. But to honor Tommy's memory, he decides not to kill anymore and becomes a hero of Starling City. In his costumed guise, he has alternately been called "The Hood", "The Vigilante", and "Arrow".
  • David Ramsey portrays John Diggle, Oliver's partner, bodyguard, and good friend. More perceptive than his tough exterior might suggest, John was the first person in Starling City to notice Oliver is no longer the same man as he was 5 years ago before he got stranded on that island. John is ex-military, and works to have Oliver channel his abilities into helping others in the city, and not just taking down the wealthy, corrupt businessmen that worked with Oliver's father. The character was introduced in the DC Comics universe with Green Arrow (Vol. 5) #24.
  • Emily Bett Rickards portrays Felicity Smoak,[5] the IT girl at Queen Consolidated who has become part of Oliver's vigilante team. A character by the same name has appeared in the comics, as Ronnie Raymond's step-mother who runs a software company.[6]

He eventually learned Oliver's secret identity and joined his team.

  • Katie Cassidy portrays Dinah "Laurel" Lance, a character based on the DC Comics character Black Canary.[1][2] In season 1, Laurel is a non-profit attorney who fights for the rights of the less fortunate but in season 2, starts off as an Assistant District Attorney, but is fired at mid season due to her drug addiction.
  • Paul Blackthorne portrays Detective Quentin Lance, Laurel's father and Starling City police detective.[4]The character is based on the DC Comics character, Larry Lance, who was also a detective, and husband to Dinah Drake Lance and father to Dinah Laurel Lance. At the start of the series, Detective Lance blamed Oliver for the presumed death of his daughter, Sara, as she was with him on his family yacht when it sank. He was also out to capture the vigilante, who he saw as a menace to the city for the vigilante's willingness to break the law and kill in the pursuit of stopping crime. In season 2, Lance had been demoted to beat cop and became more accepting of the vigilante's actions, even teaming up with him when needed. When Sara returns to Starling City, Lance is the first of his family to discover that his daughter is alive.
  • Willa Holland portrays Thea Queen, Oliver's troubled younger sister. Thea's recreational drug use is resolved by the end of Season One when she narrowly escapes being jailed for driving while under the influence. Her brother's occasional nickname for her is "Speedy", which was put into the script intentionally by the writers, along with her middle name of Dearden, as an easter egg connection to one of Green Arrow's sidekicks in the comics.[3] In Season 2, she has started running Oliver's nightclub and is later revealed to be Malcolm Merlyn's biological daughter.
  • Susanna Thompson portrays Moira Queen, Oliver's mother. Moira is revealed to also be part of the secret organization her late-husband was involved with, which was making plans to bring down the city as a means of rebuilding it in the image of the organization's leader. She stands trial for her alleged crimes in season 2, and is revealed to have had an affair with Malcolm Merlyn in the distant past, which causes estrangement from Oliver. After she is acquitted of the charges, she decides to run for Mayor of Starling City.
  • Colin Donnell portrayed Tommy Merlyn, was Oliver's best friend who eventually learns of Oliver's secret identity. Tommy also dated Laurel for a period of time. Malcolm is apparently killed by Oliver in the first season finale, but his plan to destroy the Glades still succeeds. However, his plans inadvertently resulted in Tommy's death.[10] He is based on the comics character Merlyn, an archenemy of Green Arrow.[11][12] In Season 2, it is revealed that he did not die, that he had been trained by the League of Assassins, and that he is the biological father of Thea Queen.
